Remembering those less fortunate
By - ActualBacchus
I have had a job throughout the lockdown. I have been working extra and all the stat days and I cant afford takeaways.
fuck I cant afford groceries.
Gets any worse and Ill have to send my toddler out to work.
I'm really sorry to hear that. A lot of shit needs to change in this world. I'm lucky enough that my wife and I have both been working and have schedules that allow that even when our kids aren't at school - and have relatively reasonable rent - but the way we treat the working poor needs to change somehow.
the dumb thing is my salary is over 70k, wife and two kids, the highest tax bracket and we are the working poor, we are a lot better off than heaps of people, we have our own home, but we live on a very thin line between ok and bust.
I was like wtf how... then I read two kids... gotcha
I was shitting money once, two kids and my wife isnt working.
Hopefully it turns around a bit this year and then some more in a couple of years.
It sucks. My parents were able to buy a house and raise three kids off a single median income and we lived very comfortably, that's not even close to possible today.
Bro I feel what you mean... Like with how today's economy is, even before lockdown, with the whole consumerism just being the "thing" and living expenses being up through the roof I'm not surprised you're struggling with that pay... Hope you can see some light after this by, as bad as it sounds, when the economy falls and shits a bit cheaper. Kia kaha mate.
Looking back at Married with Children and The Simpson's is an eye opener too how unequal the world has become since then.
I feel ya pal. 3 of our 4 kids are special needs and are homeschooled. Just me working. Grinding myself down and feeling like I'm getting nowhere. At least we have our own house. Should be paid off in about 5 years.
Its such a joke having the highest tax bracket at 70k.
I'm on a 70k+ salary too as well as a second job (side hustle)
When I did my budgeting for just myself, its more than enough. I can save, I can go out and have fun, even go for a vacation.
I redid my budget for a wife and kids with a mortgage situation just on my income alone. Guess who's not getting married any time soon?
Stay strong, you are doing the right thing.
Hits me pretty hard this one, since the loss of jobs and the current food prices we've had to really try and stretch our food ingredients out. For example we managed to make 12 litres of pasta/bolognese sauce with just 500g of mince to make 3 different meals that can spread across 6 dinners. We weren't that big on crappy takeouts so I don't think we'd be missing much but still. Job seeker support although better than nothing is pretty shit to be on.
Yep, in that boat. Kinda sucks
Sorry to hear that. Maybe once things settle down we'll get a few of the good old "who needs a free pizza" threads.
I hear takeaway delivery drivers will be needed.
But don't work for Uber Eats or Restaurant Brands because they're the shittest in the business
Plenty of local alternatives popping up, as well as individual local businesses that will need drivers. Wellington has the pandemic pack (who look to be doing a shared delivery service) and the At Yours section of Wellington on a Plate (which is just an index but shows how many places are keen to get pick up and delivery going). If I needed work I'd pop over to my local (who have a great kitchen) and ask if they needed a driver, or look into Delivereasy.
If people start boycotting restaurants that are shitty to their employee's, then there isn't gonna be a lot of places left ha.
I'm okay with shitty employers going out of business
Yea I'm ok with the owners losing money, But not so cool with all the employee's that will be effected. It's not there are heaps of other hospo jobs going
Well, the issue with that is it leaves thousands of people out of work
Thousands of people are going to be out of work anyway. Better that those in work are not working for shitty employers.
Yeah tell that to those people that lose their jobs because of those employers going under. Christ, how disconnected can you be
They'll be replaced. There will still be demand for restaurants.
Have you done the numbers for Uber Eats? Margins are already tight. Nobody is going to beat them. Any startups trying to challenge them without running the numbers will simply burn a small mountain of cash and then fail.
I've just found out that two of my three of my closest friends have lost their jobs.
Mortgages fucked. Two kids apiece. Fucking hurts for me knowing it, I can't imagine what they're feeling.
They're acting really Zen though.
Its weird how little we realise how precarious our lives are. One shitty outcome can change so much. In a way, they might be lucky that its happened as part of such a global crisis. With so many people being hit at once there will be a need for solutions that help as many as possible come through this without too much damage. I hope so. I don't mean they're lucky, of course, but if a family or two fall on hard times society tends to ignore it and move on. Right now, I don't see how that can happen. I don't know what will happen instead, but it surely can't be nothing. I wish them luck.
I was thinking about this the other day; At least people made redundant during this time will have a good reason for why they lost their job or are out of work. Imagine losing your job (through no fault of your own) during normal times. It would make you feel judged all the time I bet.
> Its weird how little we realise how precarious our lives are
Bill Hicks line always resonated with me
"Anybody can be a bum; all it takes is the right girl, the right bar and the right friends, and you are, well…your buddies will see you off. They’ll christen your dumpster for you."
Never had a job anyways sooo:(
Well hopefully more people will have an empathic view of your situation now.
In recognition of a point raised by u/MrCyn
I think it's such a serious issue.
... think I'll make a meme about it.
them: all these memes about takeaways and not one acknowledgement of those who can no longer afford it
me: *spots opening*
I mean, I did flair it shitpost...to assume I think that the lack of acknowledgement of the newly unemployed in takeaway meme posts is a serious issue is a stretch. That said, this post provides an opening for discussion if people want one. Because I'm still working, and see people spending lots of money on groceries, I may sometimes forget how many people are suddenly doing it hard.
Nah all good, fair enough.
Well, I guess I apologise for using it to express separation and exclusion rather than the more traditional 'waiting for something that will never come' but it seemed to fit well enough to me, especially with the lonely dinner table element. Perhaps I'll make another one captioned "when you thought your post lockdown pizza would arrive in 30 minutes or less". I could post it here and tag you.
