My first interchange isn't exactly a thing of beauty
By - Playererf
“Stick it underground then I can just make it ugly” I see we went to the same civil engineering program
is that not just a universal program for everyone in cities skylines?
whenever i press page down and see the mess that is my underground roads it’s always quite a fun time
A tip for fellow mole road construction peoples, dig down to a deep level then match that level at several spots around the map, link these spots with motorways all nice and level, then have fun trying to corkscrew them to roads on the surface later in the game. Then try explaining to your city of 100k why you spent 4 trillion on roads they cannot use for 20 more years.

Just like in real life!

*Elon Musk wants to know your location*
I like to create underground highway systems that have surface level entrances and exits all around the city. This way I don't have to stare at all the horrific traffic jams.
Ah yes the sweep it under the city approach. I too do this, along with train tracks and metro, all the time thinking, "oh this will all come together nicely" and a week later it is time to burn it all away and start again as the mess is too great to begin to untangle.

Concealed interchanges are my specialty.
Pro-tip, an entire underground highway system is the real traffic manager. I use one until I get everything above ground lined out.
I'm in the process of building an underground highway ring around the perimeter of my whole city. Any tips for building nice interchanges with underground highways?
Not specifically, I can tell you what I normally do looks more like a tree than a circle. I usually have a four lane one way highway going each way straight through the heart of the city with short and long braches coming in and out from all parts of the city. I also use the traffic manager mod and set all the speed limits to "no limit". Make sure there are no intersections. I slowly destroy the whole thing once the above ground system comes together. I do all this because traffic can be a real headache early, during the city building process, especially when placing high density zones.
I tend to put my main tunnel deep enough so that ramps can pass both over and under it while still underground. So -24m.
Sunken highways are bae for highways going through a city, but they’re kinda difficult to execute without landscaping + move it mods. It looks way more realistic and you get those cute small bridges going over them connecting the city
I keep below ground for bike paths.
Cars merging in then 2 feet ahead cars are merging out
The accidents lol
I’ve seen roads like that in real life and they sooomehow work
They don't work so well in cs though. I find cars stopping to let traffic around if I leave spots like that and then the highway backs up really quick.
Cloverleaf is a little like that too
If it’s stupid ugly but it works ... it’s perfectly acceptable in this game.
good looking intersections is mix-maxing, change my mind
Nah. You could do one in the creator in a short time and then just paste it ingame. When you have a little exp you know what works well
Wait how does that work? You can paste stuff in a save that you made in another one?
Yes, you can do that, too with the MoveIt Mod: [https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1619685021](https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1619685021)
With this you can select nodes and segments of streets and export them. Then just import them in the save you want.
To be exact, you can export everything: buildings, props, decals with it.
Nice, thank you!
No you have to create an item in the creation Tool, then u can use it as often as you want in a game. You can create almost everything there
Oh okay interesting!
By creation tool you mean the Asset Editor right?
I never checked that out before, but I might soon, thanks!
I like that you have an overpass that then becomes an underground tunnel. Roller-coaster!!
Two or three years ago I was in the same spot as you. Cut to today and I am using like 600 assets from the workshop and CSUR to make the most difficult and realistic interchanges. It's been so long since I relaxed at this game...
I think when you download the [Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices](https://i.imgur.com/5KKaHIP.png) for fun you know you've crossed a line that can't be uncrossed.
Do you have any pictures of your interchanges?
That's what most of mine look like, and I've logged about 500 hours on this game :(
This is some real shit lol
You get better and better with time and practice. And lots of watching others who do a really good job and, of course, real life intersections.
That’s how all of mine look the first time. Just get your traffic figured out first with complex custom interchanges. Move on for a bit then one night you’ll dedicate a couple hours to making it beautiful. You’ll be surprised what you can do with this. Traffic is more important so start there.
It is a thing nonetheless
Man you’re really driving your city into the ground!
It ain't honest but it's much
Does everyone live underground? Are they mole people?
imagine the signage for this lol
...Why does it look like that?
It's connecting with an underground highway
I want an underground view so I can see this beautiful abomination!!
Hey I love it, looks very good.
Cims don’t care
The expense irl...
Just hide it with trees!
You cant tease us with that, then not show us the naked one!
We've all been there.... haven't we?
I’m still there
Bought this game at launch, this is still better than Nothing I can manage.
I honestly don’t think it’s ugly?? I like the look of all the tunnels and just knowing that somehow it still works great when you can’t see half of it
It's got personality*
Oh god have mercy
But I know exactly how proud you feel. It's only going to get better my friend! Keep up the good work
My first one was ugly as sin. Had nearly 0 curves. 95% was 90° angles (yes. Pretty much you exited at like 60mph to a 90° right turn). I had just got the game and didn't know the freedom the game had. I usually played SimCity. So just imagine the poor simitezens in my first city. I'm half tempted when I get home to see if that save exists still. Lol.
As for your beauty here? I'd love to see under it's cloak. The tunnels are cool.
(I have an idea to do a Right Side Driving one with exits and mergers off the Left Sides of the highways. See how it goes. Maybe it'll give me HAL's voice telling me "I'm sorry Dave, I can't let you do that.")
Soft curves in the air. Grid in the ground. A freaking maze underground.
IDGAF, I fucking love it!!
It's also not the worst first one either. Remember, you have to start somewhere. Give it time and soon you will be building Spaghetti Junction. 😁
This is so abstract, unique, superior...let you think about the possible underground roads that connect that interchange...very nice
This honestly makes me happy. It's charming in an ungainly, confused sort of way, and it has inspired me on how to get out of a traffic mess I've created. I'm not saying I'll do this, but it has inspired a possible solution. Thanks for sharing.
If it's efficient, no one cares the aestheticity
Ha ha. This is how my interchanges used to look like.
I then graduated to using the standard interchange, using the Move It mod, and/or combining with a roundabout for easy integration into a city.
I kinda like it I feel like it would look good in a really big city. Maybe if you put it on a hill and had the tunnels on the sides, idrk.
6 way intersection underground I bet lol
I hate interchanges! They're a nightmare to do, when I unlock s new map section then have to figure out all the ways to get it connected 😭
Looks like some weird alien plant
I feel you bro
Oh but it is! On the inside ❤
...Now you have to show us the underground view!
It looks prity ugly. 😃
Will never fade away.
Mate, mine always look awful...they work well, but they don't look good 😅
Considering when you spend ages doing them, just for it look like a plate of spaghetti.
damn i’ll gladly buy one of those
I fear that if I gaze too long upon its eldritch curves Great Cthulhu will awaken
I'm in this picture and I don't like it.
I like it! Place efficient, very modern, i think it looks really sweet!
It is beautiful to me. It is precious. Special.
Biffa whispers softly “lane mathematics”
The first step is making it work
The next step is making it work pretty
My first thought was:
How did this guy get into my city?
That's one way to do it
haha just remember, with the exception of those well-versed in city-planning, this is exactly what the first few interchanges looked like of all the "pros" haha
mine still look like this 2 years after i started playing LOL
This is what all of mine look like. As long as it works that's all that matters
That's awesome. Would like to see the rest of your city
Hey better than I could do. Once an exit was so backed up I built an underground roundabout, it worked-ish, but that would be scary in real life
Finally, an interchange after my own heart.
Brings back memories
I like your interchange, mine were similar (before i had to delete my only working save, new player problems lol) and i'll probably use it in my city later on as it's honestly what i need with a few tweaks as i can't use mods.
